Getting around in Business Bay Dubai

Navigating Business Bay is a breeze, thanks to its modern infrastructure and various transport options. Whether you prefer public transport, road travel, or something more unconventional, getting around this bustling district is both convenient and enjoyable. Here are some top ways to explore Business Bay:

  • Dubai Metro: The Red Line has a station conveniently located in Business Bay. It provides seamless access to key areas across the city, including the Dubai Mall and Dubai International Airport.
  • Taxis and Ride-Hailing: Services like Uber and Careem are readily available. They offer an easy and efficient way to travel around the city. TOP TIP. Only hail the yellow taxis with coloured roofs (usually red, yellow, green, or blue). These are taxis run by the government and are very safe and affordable. If a car that looks like a normal car, i.e., not a taxi, pulls up, say NO. They will rip you off. You can also order a cab through the Careem app. More about this in the next section.
  • Driving: With well-maintained roads and ample parking, driving is a viable option for those with a rental car.
  • Water Transport: Enjoy a unique perspective of the city by taking a ferry or abra along the scenic Dubai Canal.
  • Walking: Business Bay’s pedestrian-friendly layout, complete with wide sidewalks and pedestrian bridges, makes exploring the district on foot a delightful option.
  • Scooters and Bikes: Rent a scooter through the Lime app or hop on a bike with Careem for an eco-friendly way to zip around and enjoy the fresh air. Scooters can end up being quite pricey with 45 minutes costing about £12. A bike, on the other hand, is £2 for a day pass and the first 45 minutes of EVERY journey is free within that 24-hour period. Dubai has been built with active commutes in mind. So you will find that most walkways have a scooter/bike lane, and you rarely ever need to get on an actual road. I’m useless on a bike, and I even managed it!

Careem App

Ok, so as soon as you arrive in Dubai, you have to download the Careem app. It’s totally free and will change your life. I think of it like Deliveroo and Uber combined, but on steroids.

With just a few taps on your phone, you can book a ride that suits your style and budget—whether you’re looking for a quick hop in an economy car or a more leisurely ride in a luxury vehicle. It’s like having your personal chauffeur at your fingertips! The app is super easy to use, with handy features like fare estimates, ride-tracking, and cashless payments making the whole process seamless. Plus, it’s not just for getting from A to B; Careem also offers food delivery and bike rentals, meaning it’s got you covered no matter what you need. I’ve found it to be incredibly reliable, ensuring I can explore Dubai’s vibrant streets with peace of mind. Whether you’re heading to a business meeting or just out for some fun, Careem delivers convenience and comfort every step of the way.

Best time of year to visit

The best time to visit Business Bay, and Dubai in general, is during the cooler months from November to March. During this period, the weather is pleasantly mild, making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. Temperatures typically range between 20°C and 30°C, providing comfortable conditions for exploring attractions like the Dubai Canal and Burj Khalifa. This is also the peak tourist season, with numerous events and festivals taking place. This adds to the city’s vibrant atmosphere. However, it’s worth noting that accommodation and flight prices can be higher during these months. Booking in advance is advisable. Visiting during the summer months, from June to August, means dealing with extremely high temperatures, often exceeding 40°C. Although this period offers lower prices and fewer crowds, outdoor activities can be quite challenging. Regardless of the season, Business Bay’s myriad indoor attractions ensure that there’s always something to enjoy, come rain or shine.

Dress code in Dubai

When visiting Dubai, it’s important to be mindful of the local dress code, which reflects the city’s cultural norms and traditions. In Business Bay and other public areas, both men and women are expected to dress modestly. This generally means covering shoulders and knees. It is particularly important when visiting religious sites or government buildings. Lightweight, breathable fabrics are ideal due to the warm climate. Having a light shawl or scarf on hand can be useful for covering up when needed. Swimwear is acceptable at beaches, pools, and water parks. However, it’s advisable to cover up when moving away from these areas. In hotels, malls, and most leisure spots, the dress code is more relaxed, with western attire widely accepted. While Dubai is modern and cosmopolitan, showing respect for local customs by dressing appropriately goes a long way in ensuring a respectful and enjoyable visit.

Are there any beaches nearby?

While Business Bay is primarily an urban district, several beautiful beaches are just a short drive away. They offer a perfect escape for relaxation and recreation. Here’s a list of some nearby beaches to explore:

  • Jumeirah Beach: One of the most popular spots, about 15 to 20 minutes from Business Bay by car. This public beach offers stunning views of the iconic Burj Al Arab and provides excellent facilities such as showers, changing rooms, and lifeguards.
  • Kite Beach: This is my personal favourite. It has a real ‘good vibes’ feel to it and you can almost kid yourself that you’re in Europe. Trust me, sometimes after all the ‘fakeness’ of Dubai you want something a bit more authentic. It is ideal for those who enjoy water sports or a more active beach experience. Options for kite surfing, paddleboarding, and beach volleyball are available.
  • Private Hotel Beaches: For a more luxurious outing, many hotels along the coastline offer private beach access and day passes.
